And the Smell Nearly Made Her Pass Out. What It Really Was Left Everyone Stunned

It started as an ordinary morning. I stepped outside to water my flowers and make sure the neighborhood cats hadn’t torn up the trash again. But before I even reached the garden, I stopped dead in my tracks — an unbearable stench hit me so hard that I felt my stomach twist.

Right there, by the flower bed, something was moving.

It looked like a creature from a nightmare — slimy, glistening, and red, like it had been turned inside out. A gelatinous sac pulsed slightly under the sunlight. The smell of decay filled the air, so sharp it burned my nose.

My first thought was that an animal had died — or worse, that I’d stumbled upon something unnatural. Trembling, I snapped a photo and rushed back inside.

I typed into Google: “red slimy thing smells like rotting flesh.”

At first, I saw people describing parasites, sea creatures, even alien eggs. My heart sank… until I found the truth — and it was just as creepy.

What I had found was a “Devil’s Finger Fungus” (Clathrus archeri) — also known as the Octopus Stinkhorn. It starts off looking like a slimy egg before splitting open to reveal bright red, tentacle-like arms. It’s famous for its horrific stench — a smell designed to attract flies, which spread its spores.

The realization made me laugh in relief — but I’ll never forget that first moment of terror. If you ever stumble upon something like this in your garden, don’t panic — you’ve just met one of nature’s strangest creations.
